Building Well Paths
Choosing a Well Path
In the upper left hand corner of this page is the Well Path dropdown box. This dropdown presents a list of all well paths that have been added to the current job. Selecting a well path here will display the well path data associated with that well path and set that well path as the current working well path. This means that when surveys, slides, Rotates, and targets are added, they will be added to which ever well path is selected here.
Adding a Survey, Slide, or Rotate
A Survey, Slide, or Rotate can be added using the appropriate button from the upper left hand corner of this page. For the selected activity enter the date and time data in the first row of fields.
Activity specific data will be entered in the second row of fields . For a survey, enter Sensor Depth-, _Inclination-, Azimuth, and Bit To Sensor. For a slide, enter From Depth, To Depth, and Toolface. For a rotate, enter From Depth and To Depth.
Additional Details
As each survey, slide, or rotate is created there is the oppurtunity to enter Additional Details. The data here typically does not change often during drilling. If none of this data has changed since the last activity, use the Copy Last Entry button to use the data from the last activity.
Activity Type
As activities are created it’s important to set the correct activity type. This determines if an activity is an MWD Activity or a Directional Activity.
Adding a Target
A target can be added using the Target button from the upper left hand corner of this page. In Drakewell multiple targets can be stacked by simply adding one target after another.
To create a Target start by entering a Name in the Name textbox. Next choose the appropriate Target Type. Each Target Type has specific required parameters:
J Curve:
- TVD
- North
- East
3D S Curve:

- Azi

Target parameters can be pulled from existing well path points using the Select From Well Plan button. After a Target is added it is listed in the target section at the bottom of the page.
Current Survey
The Current Survey section displays detailed positional information about the current wellbore. It couples that information with a graphical representation of the distance High/Low and Left/Right of the current survey from the well plan. A detailed Projection To Bit is displayed directly below the Current Survey.
Traveling Cylinder
The Traveling Cylinder button can be found in the Current Survey section. The Traveling Cylinder visualizes the distance and direction of the wellbore versus the plan. The slider at the bottom of the window us used to navigate the view to any point in the wellbore from tie in to the current survey.
